| Abstract: | The purpose of this research was to identify constraints which affect the use of public park and recreation facilities by urban residents; to examine the relationships which exist among constraints, recreation participation, various sociodemographic characteristics of population subgroups, and attitudes toward leisure and work; and to indicate how these factors might be applied to the management and planning of public park and recreation facilities. Constraints were defined as blockages to participation and enjoyment of recreation activity, variables which inhibit or prevent freedom of choice. Sociodemographics measured included sex, ethnicity, age, income, presence or absence of children, age of youngest child, marital status, and whether or not respondent visited parks alone or with others. For testing, community-wide surveys were administered in two major urban areas. A survey instrument administered face-to-face to 522 adult respondents in Austin, Texas, collected data on sociodemographic characteristics, participation in recreation activities, constraints which affected recreation participation, and attitudes toward leisure and work. A telephone survey administered to 759 adult respondents in Metropolitan Dade County, Florida, collected data on sociodemographics, participation in recreation activities, and constraints which affected recreation participation.Hypothesis testing included the use of four statistical methods, Chi-square, analysis of variance, factor analysis, and probit analysis. The eight hypotheses tested examined differences in participation in public recreation activities based on sociodemographics, leisure attitude dimensions, and work attitude dimensions; differences in sociodemographics and leisure attitude dimensions and work attitude dimensions; presence and types of constraint factors; differences in numbers, types, and impact of constraints based on sociodemographics; and relationships between constraints and participation. It was found that inclusion of data on nonparticipation as well as participation greatly increased the explained variance of sociodemographic characteristics. Leisure and work attitude dimensions proved to be ineffective as predictors of participation and nonparticipation in specific activities. There were significant differences in leisure and work ethic attitudes based on sociodemographics. Six constraint factors were produced as a result of the analysis. There were significant differences in the impact of constraints among people in different sociodemographic categories. Constraint factors can be useful predictors of participation and nonparticipation in recreation activities. |
