A survey of selected preservice vocational teacher training programs in the state of Texas relative to the education of handicapped students.

| Abstract: | The aim of this study was to determine if preservice vocational teacher educators of selected vocational education programs are complying with the general certification requirements adopted by the Texas State Board of Education with respect to knowledge and skills related to handicapped students. An extension of this aim deals with determining the procedure(s) utilized to infuse the special education information within existing courses. The data were gathered from a purposive sample of 44 heads of departments from Agricultural Education, Home Economics Education, Industrial Education, and from 44 teacher educators through an exhaustive study of selected vocational programs in 24 teacher training institutions in the state of Texas. Two survey instruments, the directed telephone interview and a mail survey form, were designed to ascertain the manner in which preservice vocational teacher trainees are being educated to work with handicapped students through the implementation of the amended rule. The heads of departments responded to the telephone interview while the teacher educators commented in writing to a mail survey form. One hundred percent of the selected heads of departments were contacted and responded during the telephone interview; 75 percent of the teacher educators returned the mail survey form. Responses from the telephone interviews and the mail survey were categorized and tabulated. The results of this study showed that 86 percent of the respondents reported an awareness of the general certification rule while twelve percent of the respondents were not aware of the general certification amended rule. In the main, the teacher training programs do not differ greatly in the implementation of the amended rule. The programs tended to employ similar training approaches. The majority of the information was infused within existing courses in regular vocational programs, special education, and in courses in general education. The information gathered from this study can be used by the State Board of Education, vocational teacher education training programs, and the Division of Teacher Education at the Texas Education Agency in the preparation of vocational teachers who will work with handicapped students in the future. |
