Abstract:Problem solving in integrated pest management (IPM) is a complex procedure involving the use of mathematical models and rapidly proliferating information. The effectiveness of an IPM decision-maker is a function of how well he can structure available knowledge. In this research, the concepts of "Decision Support Systems" (DSS) have been adopted to develop the problem-solving structure. Based on this structure, a decision support system for southern pine beetle management (SPBDSS) was implemented. In SPBDSS, there are three major components, the interface mechanism, the model base, and the data base. The interface mechanism provides users with a flexible I/O control, procedural control, and problem structuring facility. In the model base, twelve models from various categories have been integrated. They form solution algorithms specific to a particular set of problems for possible solutions. The data base provides users with invaluable technical information to aid the problem-solving. The stand and spot data are also stored in the data base which can be used repeatedly as input values for additional simulations. Finally, the data base also provides information on the system usage and narrative description of the available model technology to improve the usability of this system.
