| Abstract: | Pecan leaf surfaces were characterized in relation to tree age, leaf age, and leaf surface. Three types of trichomes were found. Awn-like hairs were the most common trichome type on juvenile trees and reached their greatest density on the abaxial surface of immature leaves. Peltate scales were present in two forms: bladder-like scales and concave scales. The two were distinguished on the basis of size, shape, and location. Both types were more common on the abaxial than the adaxial surface. The bladder-like peltate scale was more common on immature than mature leaves, while the occurrence of concave scales was unaffected by leaf age. Capitate glands were observed on the veins of immature leaves from both juvenile and adult trees. Abaxial and adaxial corn leaf surfaces were characterized. Three trichome types were found: macro-hairs, prickle-hairs, and micro-hairs. Each was associated with a specific region of the corn leaf surface. Differences in macro-hair density as a function of leaf Zn content were observed. Zinc deficient leaves had only 0.5% the number of macro-hairs found on Zn sufficient leaves. Attempts to correlate surface morphology with foliar absorption using energy dispersive X-ray analysis failed due to the high detection limits of Zn and the low spatial resolution possible under the conditions of the analysis.
