| Abstract: | The new compounds dicyclohexylarsinic acid and bis(2-phenyl ethyl)- arsinic acid were prepared in 83% and 50% yields, respectively, as white crystalline materials by reacting diethylaminodichloroarsine with the appropriate Grignard reagents and oxidizing the hydrolyzed reaction mixtures. To prepare ion exchange resins containing RASO₂H- groups, precursor diorganylarsinic compounds with functional groups allowing the formation of polymers are needed. 4-Bromophenyl(methyl)arsinic acid was obtained from diethylamino(methyl)chloroarsine and 4-bromophenylmagnesium bromide. 2-Hydroxyethyl(methyl)arsinic acid has been successfully prepared by the Meyer reaction and purified. 2-Trichlorosiloxyethyl(methyl)iodoarsine was prepared from this arsinic acid as a possible precursor for a polymeric arsinic acid. Attempts to introduce arsinic acid groups into polystyrene by reacting polystyrene-4- diazonium chloride with methyldichioroarsine gave a product with 10% arsenic. This corresponds to the substitution of MeAsO₂H- groups (via arsenic-carbon bonds) in the para position of 1 out of every 5 phenyl rings in the polymer matrix. |
