| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to determine the degree of comparability between the WISC and the WISC-R. Previous research studies have indicated that the WISC-R yields a Full Scale IQ score that is approximately 7.5 points lower that the WISC Full Scale IQ when the tests are administered in a counterbalanced design within a short interest interval. If the IQ score is a major determiner in the placement of children into special education classes, then this 7.5 point discrepancy can determine eligibility based on the instrument of measurement. The methodology used in these studies was faulted for failing to adequately consider differential practice effect which may have results in the reported discrepancy of half a standard deviation. The effect of practice can be controlled, however, when sufficient time elapses between administrations of the instruments. It was demonstrated using research with the WISC that although IQ tends to increase somewhat, it remains relatively stable over time. Since the item composition of the two instruments is so similar, it was hypothesized that similar stability would also be evident when the WISC-R is examined longitudinally. |
