Description
Abstract:The dissertation presents three investigations of various topics in monetary economics which have received a substantial amount of interest in recent economic literature. In this sense, the dissertation is broader in scope and different in form from the usual dissertation in Economics. In investigating the topics, the dissertation first presents an overview consisting of a discussion of the interest in and contributions made by the dissertation to the theories of currency substitution, the nearness of "near-monies," and the money demand-supply relation. These topics are then taken up in successive order and examined on an individual basis. Each investigation is self-contained, in the sense that each contains the following: an introductory discussion, including a brief discussion of pertinent previous works on the particular topic; a development of a model based on theoretical arguments which is amenable to empirical investigation; a discussion of the results in light of existing and new hypotheses in regards to the topics; and a summary discussion of the investigation. Hopefully, the investigations herein will expand our knowledge and understanding of currency substitution, the nearness of "near-monies," and the money demand-supply relation.
