| Abstract: | This dissertation reports an investigation of the photodissociation of the alkali iodides by the photofragment spectroscopic technique. The alkali iodides were chosen because the cross section for absorption at the available wavelength (3.57 eV) is large while the dissociation energies are all low enough, with the possible exception of Lil, for dissociation to occur. Photodissociation experiments were performed on Nal, KI, Rbl and Csl. The dissociation reaction MI -> M( ²S ₁/₂)+I(²P ₃/₂), where M is the metal, was observed by monitoring the metal atom intensity for each compound using surface ionization detection. Angular distributions of metal atoms were obtained by rotating the polarization vector of the light. In the course of the data reduction, a new model, dubbed the individual counting model (ICM), was developed to determine the effects of molecular rotation, translation and excited state lifetime on the observed angular distribution of photofragments. The experimental results indicate a trend from a highly anisotropic distribution for Nal to nearly isotropic for Rbl and probable near isotropy for Csl. Saturation, thought possibly to account for a loss of anisotropy, is shown to be unimportant for these compounds. The angular distribution results are interpreted in terms of the excited state lifetimes estimated using the Landau-Zener crossing probabilities.. |
