Description
Summary:This record of study describes a three year research and development effort that led to the preliminary draft of a text book titled Landscape Construction. The entire effort was a response to the absence of teaching literature in the field of landscape architectural construction. The text is a comprehensive work designed for classroom use. It is intended primarily for use in the undergraduate construction courses offered in landscape architecture, but is also an auxiliary reference for practicing professionals. The text is written in non-technical language, in so far as practical, and heavily illustrated. The subject matter covered in the text is self-supporting requiring no previous training other than a basic understanding of algebra and trigonometry. The text is organized into four units that can be used as mutually supportive segments or used independently. "Unit One: Shaping the Landscape" contains chapters on grading, highway alignment and drainage. "Unit Two: Construction Detailing" has chapters on basic statics and mechanics, design with wood, and design with concrete and masonary. "Unit Three: Special Systems" has two chapters that cover irrigation and lighting, respectively. "Unit Four: Contract Documents and Specification" is a single chapter on contract documents and specifications. Each chapter in the text has been used in the classroom at Texas A&M University and revised based on student response. The text has also been reviewed by other teaching professionals to assure that the material was appropriate and comprehensive. Landscape Construction is a unique addition to the literature in landscape construction in that it takes a design oriented approach to the technology of construction. Throughout the text the emphasis is on the creative use of technology to generate new design solutions to problems in the landscape.
