| Abstract: | The purpose of this study was to determine the perception of the role of the secondary school counselor held by principals, counselors, administrator educators, and counselor educators in Texas. In this study also produced needed information that would help administrators and counselors in Texas understand the role of the secondary school counselor. This study utilized the Counselor function Inventory (CFI) (Shumake, 1964). The 77 items in this inventory were designed to study the major service areas of the counseling program in terms of levels of responsibility and participation on the part of the counselor. The instrument was designed to cover seven areas of counselor services: placement, counseling, follow-up, orientation, student data, information, and miscellaneous. The samples of the four populations included 100 potential respondents in each group. They were asked to respond to the CFI and four demographic items. A total of 76.25 per cent useable returns were received. Each of the four null hypotheses were statistically analyzed using an Amdahl 470 V/6 computer at Texas A&M University. Discriminant analysis of the responses to the items representing each of the seven counselor function areas was used to determine significant differences across the four groups.. |
