| Abstract: | Epidemiological studies of Trypanosoma vivax infections in cattle were made in the Cauca River Valley and the Atlantic Coast of Colombia. The principle area of investigation was the Department of Valle del Cauca lying in the Cauca River Valley. Isolations of T. vivax were made from the field and identified on grounds of morphology and behavior in experimental animals, however, the need was stressed to establish the relationship between Old and New World isolates using modern biochemical techniques. Literature sources indicate that T. vivax in the New World has a size intermediate between T. vivax and Trypanosoma uniforme in the Old World. A satisfactory technique for low temperature storage was performed using liquid nitrogen, Improvements were made on the Hematocrit Centrifuge Technique (H. C. T.) and the Indirect fluorescent Antibody Test (I. F. A.T) which were used as standard diagnostic methods. No success was obtained from attempts to adapt T. vivax to rodents and obtain a source of antigen. The initial work was performed on two farms where clinical episodes of bovine trypanosomiasis were occurring, associated with the demonstration of T. vivax on blood smears. However, the use of the I.F.A.T. on these and neighboring farms revealed that the whole of the Cauca Valley was endemic for the infection.. |
