| Abstract: | This study analyzed the professional tasks engaged in and relative time spent on those tasks by teachers of vocational agriculture in public secondary sohools of New Mexico. This study also developed a data baseline di* selected background characteristics for use in future research efforts. A job survey instrument containing 110 tasks was created, reviewed, edited, and pilot tested prior to printing for mail distribution to the study population during the summer and fall of 1977- From fifty-one returned job survey instruments fifty provided data analyzed by computer programs written specifically for this study. All 110 tasks were performed by at least one vocational agriculture teacher. The mean number of tasks performed by all New Mexico vocational agriculture teachers was 8 7 .5- The range in the number of tasks performed was 53 to 109- When teachers were grouped according to leadership roles, subject matter responsibilities, superior versus all other teachers, and crop reporting districts there were judged to be no differences in their job at the task level. When these same groups were compared at the duty level, with duty level being categories of related tasks, it was found that a significant difference in relative- time spent on duties existed for four duties in the superior teachers versus all other teachers comparison. Those four duty areas were instructional management, Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter activities, supervised occupational experience program (SOEP), and professional role and development. The list of duties and relative time spent on each duty listed in descending order as developed in the study provides the hasis for developing a job description of teachers of vocational agriculture in public secondary schools of New Mexico. |
