Abstract:The purpose of this investigation was to determine if Lufkin High School graduates who had used a BSCS Yellow Version biology textbook made higher grades in college freshman zoology, botany, and biology (zoology + botany) at Stephen F. Austin State University than those students who had used a traditional high school biology textbook. The objectives of the research investigation were: 1. To determine the grade point averages of males and females in college freshman zoology, botany, and biology (zoology + botany) at Stephen F. Austin State University who had previously used the BSCS Yellow Version textbook in Lufkin High School. 2. To determine the grade point averages of males and females in college freshman zoology, botany, and biology (zoology + botany) at Stephen F. Austin State University who had previously used a traditional biology textbook in Lufkin High School. 3. To compare the mean grade point averages in college zoology, botany, and biology (zoology + botany) for students who had used either a BSCS or a traditional biology textbook when the selected variables (textbook, rank in high school graduating class, and sex) are considered. Grade point averages were determined for the 232 subjects involved in the study. These students had used either a BSCS or traditional high school textbook from 1961-62 to 1969-70 in Lufkin High School and had taken college freshman zoology and/or botany at Stephen F. Austin State University from 1964-65 to 1971-72. These subjects were placed in eight sampling groups on the bases of sex, rank in high school graduating class, and high school textbook. Factorial analysis of variance statistical procedures, using the method of unweighted means, were used to test the 21 null hypotheses formulated for the mean grade point averages of students in the research study. ...
