Description
Abstract:The primary purpose of this research was to provide additional information concerning the relations between test-wiseness (TW) and performance on standardized measures of scholastic achievement and general mental ability as well as the relations between test-wiseness and sex, ethnicity and grade-point average. A review of relevant research failed to produce any previous investigation of the relation between TW and ethnicity. A sample of 306 eleventh grade subjects was selected from a large public high school. Regression analysis produced significant relations between TW and grade-point average, (F₁,₃₀₃ = 18.99; p<.01) performance on a measure of general mental ability scores (F₁,₃₀₃ = 30.93; p<.01) and standardized achievement test scores (F₁,₃₀₃ = 43.88; p<.01). One-way analysis of variance revealed significant differences in the mean level of TW skill among Mexican-American, Negro, and White subjects (F₂,₃₀₃ = 24.95; p<.01). No significant difference was found between the mean TW test scores of males and females.
