Description
Abstract:The immune system, a major host defense mechanism against malignant cells, is affected by total body irradiation with Cobalt-60 or with neutrons. Evidence is presented that there is an effect upon the humoral immune response of tumor bearing and non-tumor bearing dogs by therapeutic doses of Cobalt-60 and of neutrons. This effect was apparent even though irradiation was given to areas which would not be considered a vital part of the immune system. There was no apparent effect upon the cell mediated response. These effects from therapeutic irradiation conformed to the pattern which has been established for total body irradiation.
