| Abstract: | Thick section light and thin section electron microscopy were used to study Panioum mosaic virus-St. Augustinegrass strain inoculated susceptible and resistant St. Augustinegrass and Red Siberian millet, an assay host. Icosahedral virions arranged in small crystals were first observed in bundle sheath cells of millet 7 days after inoculation. Larger crystals were observed in undifferentiated cells of the vascular bundle after 13 days. Crystals were more easily detected in the millet, but crystals were detected in St. Augustinegrass. Inclusion bodies were observed as early as 10 days after inoculation. All susceptible tissues that were studied had inclusion bodies and associated viral particles. These bodies were not detected in the resistant Floratam. Viral particles were detected near the inclusion bodies. Accumulations of virions were observed in the cytoplasm and the vacuoles. |
