Su forma constituye un experimento al margen de lo que es un relato en el sentido tradicional; más bien es una obra en que la narración trasciende los límites de la escritura, en que las palabras se convierten en la vivencia que se describe y en que la lectura constituye, por así decirlo, la experiencia misma del argumento. [Farabeuf, or the Chronicle of an Instant may be the description of a rite, the posing of an enigma, the utterance of a riddle, the repetition of a magic formula, or perhaps the answer to an unknown question—to a cryptic inquiry. Its form constitutes an experiment lying outside the bounds of what constitutes a narrative in the traditional sense; rather, it is a work in which narration transcends the limits of writing, in which words become the very experience being described, and in which reading constitutes—so to speak—the experience of the plot itself]."--Cover, page 4. The novel takes inspiration from the historical figure Dr. Farabeuf, a French surgeon associated with medical procedures and anatomical study, but the narrative is highly symbolic and nonlinear. One of the recurring references is the famous photograph of the "Chinese torture" execution (Lingchi), which becomes a meditation on perception, memory, and representation. |
