Abstract:The effect of transverse shear deformation on stresses and deflections in thin shells of revolution is investigated by considering several particular types of shells. First and second approximation solutions with and without transverse shear deformation are derived and a numerical example is presented for a semi-infinite circular cylindrical shell. First approximation solutions with and without transverse shear deformation are determined for spherical shells and indicated for ellipsoidal shells of revolution. The following conclusions are stated: 1. From an engineering point of view, transverse shear deformation may be neglected in analyzing thin shells of revolution. 2. From an engineering point of view, second approximation theories appear to offer no advantages over first approximation theories for analyzing thin shells of revolution.
