Description
Abstract:Escherichia coli (American Type Culture Collection Number 11775) was grown in nutrient broth and treated with sodium fluoride at concentrations up to 0.30M and with radioactive fluoride ions (¹⁸₉F). DNA was isolated and examined for complexing with fluoride ions. The ions were not found to complex with DNA in vivo. Fluoride ions were associated with the organism in such a way that they were not removable by washing. Growth of E. coli was examined in various sodium fluoride concentrations. Concentrations of sodium fluoride up to 0.29M delayed growth of the organism. The delay was proportional to the fluoride concentrations. ...
