520 3 |a Reciprocal hybrids and their parents were planted in sand in sealed containers, under sterile conditions and after inoculation of seeds with Fusarium moniliforme Sheld. They were tested for emergence percentage and emergence speed at 15 C. Other reciprocal hybrids and parents were planted on paper towels under sterile and inoculated conditions, and observed for germination percentage and rate of shoot elongation at 15, 25, and 40 C. These experiments were designed to determine if there are direct deleterious effects of 15 and 40 C temperatures on germinating sorghum seeds or seedlings apart from the influence of pathogens; to determine if F(,1) hybrid seeds or seedlings exhibit maternal effects or hybrid vigor at 15 and 40 C; and in an attempt to obtain hybrids whose germinating seeds or seedlings perform well under both low- and high-temperature stress. For most genotypes, one or more seedlots exhibited no deleterious temperature effects on percentage of emergence or germination at 15 and 40 C under sterile conditions. Observed effects may have resulted from deep-seated pathogens within the seeds. There was a significant negative correlation between percentage of emergence at 15 C under sterile conditions and the percentage of seeds contaminated with seedborne F. moniliforme after surface-sterilization. ...
