Although many scales exist to measure hypnotic responsivity, none of these instruments focuses primarily on response to post-hypnotic suggestions. Since post-hypnotic response has been proposed to be an important ingredient in therapeutic change and also because researchers lack an accurate device to measure this phenomenon, it was believed that the development of a scale to measure this behavior would be a valuable addition to both the clinician and the research. The development of the final form of the PHSS was accomplished through both content and statistical analyses. After the development of the preliminary scale by content analysis, 257 subjects were contacted and consented to participate in the various aspects of this study. Based upon the responses of the subjects, an item analysis was conducted. Then validity and reliability data were gathered on the scale developed through the item analysis. A factor analysis was utilized to determine number of factors contained in the subjects' post-hypnotic responses. Finally, tentative norms were presented for the following samples: males, females, students at Texas A&M University, students at San Jose State University, and the total college sample. The PHSS appeared to have adequate reliability and validity to begin to utilized by both clinicians and researchers. Refinement, however, occurs over numerous testings and to this end, the limitations of this present study and recommendations for future studies were discussed.
