520 3 |a The fraction of the incoming flux which is scattered inelastically in a nucleon-nucleon reaction below 800 MeV is determined by a theoretical approach. The scattering amplitude for the NN(pi) final state, the dominant channel, is presented in an angular momentum basis. This partial wave helicity amplitude projects the angular momentum states from a plane wave amplitude derived elsewhere. A computer program has been written to evaluate the partial wave amplitudes, from which the cross sections of certain initial angular momenta are calculated. Finally, the inelasticities of an initial NN reaction proceeding from isospin 0 and isospin 1 states are found. The inelasticities will be useful as input to phase shift analysis programs in order to constrain the search on high partial waves. The computed inelasticities are generally consistent with existing phase shift analyses. Due to the dominance of the delta intermediate state, all of the isospin 1 results are significant. The only important isospin 0 yields, which proceed through the nucleon intermediate state, are those for ('3)S(,1), ('3)D(,1), and ('1)P(,1) partial waves. At high angular momenta, the one-pion-exchange mechanism dominates the process, and the nucleons may be considered as pointlike particles. The results also agree fairly well with two other theoretical approaches, but the consensus is best at high partial waves, where the phase shift analyses have large systematic errors.
