| Abstract: | A knowledge-based computer program has been constructed to help engineers select the most appropriate thermodynamic models for estimating the physical properties of fluid mixtures. The THERMODYNAMICIST expert system consists of a knowledge base which contains the expertise and experience of several human experts from the Chemical Engineering Department and the Thermodynamics Research Center at Texas A&M University and from ChemShare Corporation, as well as knowledge obtained from books and journal articles. This system was built on a Symbolics 3645 LISP dedicated computer using ART as the expert system building shell. Rules of thumb regarding when a particular model is applicable are used to initially select one or more candidate models that may adequately represent the behavior of a specified fluid mixture. These rules frequently require estimates of certain fluid properties; to obtain this information, THERMODYNAMICIST calls Design II, a process simulator from ChemShare Corporation residing on a VAX computer. Candidate models are ranked according to accuracy and speed; THERMODYNAMICIST then provides the user with the option to have Design II compute the fluid physical properties using one or more of the ranked models. An explanation facility has been built to allow the system to explain to the user the steps it used and the logic it employed while obtaining a solution. |
