Ballad of a soldier /

A young man refuses a medal following an heroic action and instead takes leave from the front to visit his mother. During his travels by train, truck, and on foot, he meets many people: a crippled veteran, a comic sentry, faithful and faithless wives, and a girl with whom he falls in love.
