|a A mathematical framework to dynamically optimize diets for broiler chicks from birth to market is developed. The dietary requirements are calculated daily together with a least-cost diet solved by a linear programming algorithm. The optimal growth path, marketing age and bird density are also economically optimized by a non-linear gradient search algorithm. A dynamic broiler growth model capable of predicting growth and body composition (fat, feathers and carcass) is also developed and linked to the optimization procedure. The growth model is based on the integrated rate method (IRM) which uses continuous time Markov theory as its foundation. Several simulations of the model were performed to investigate the effect of various diets, including the optimal diets calculated by the optimization procedure. These simulations were designed to test the effects of energy and protein concentration, energy intake, protein intake, and feed intake on the body composition. The effects of varying periods and severity of feed restrictions on compensatory growth and final body composition were also tested. The results of model simulations indicate that savings of 8% to 10% on feed costs can be achieved by feed restrictions at an early age. Furthermore, the restrictions reduce the amount of fat at marketing age. The model can be used for experimental design of feed rations.
