520 3 |a This study investigated the effects of a home-school contractual agreement on the attitudes of parents and teachers and on student achievement. Data collection occurred during the 1982-1983 school year in two separate school districts in Texas. Analysis of variance and paired t-tests were used to determine any change in attitudes of the parents in three separate groups. The composite achievement and subject score means were analyzed for possible statistical differences by analysis of variance. Scheffe's multiple range test were used to determine significance among group means. The three groups were comprised of the students and parents who were in the contract group (Group A); the students and parents who did not participate in the treatment (Group B); and the students and parents from the control group (Group C). The treatment consisted of a contractual agreement between the parents and teachers that required each person involved to complete specified activities each week. A Parent Opinion Inventory and Teacher Opinion Inventory as well as a specific questionnaire developed to evaluate the Better Learner Program itself was used to collect the data to measure any change in attitudes. The achievement scores in the contract subject area and the composite scores were used as pre and post test data. The data indicated no change in the attitudes of parents. The attitudes of teachers were not reported since there was such a small n. However, there was a significant difference in the achievement levels of the control group and the contract group. It was concluded that the home-school contractual program did have an effect on student achievement in the contract subject area and overall achievement.
